The Palio di Siena is a competition between the contrade of Siena, in the form of a medieval joust equestrian. The “career”, as it is traditionally called the race normally takes place twice a year: on 2 July the Palio held in honour of the Madonna of Provenzano, and on 16 August that in honor of the Madonna Assunta.
According to some sources, was probably in the memorable battle of Montaperti in 1260 (cited by Dante in the tenth Canto of Hell: “the torment the great destruction/that made the red colored Springs”) and the narrow escape of Siena’s people decided to hold the famous Palio.
The history of the Palio di Siena is more articulated and complex, and rooted in an even more remote period. In the Italian cities of the 12th and 13th centuries it was customary to organize horse races, both as a public spectacle, and as competition between the different equine farms owned by nobles and citizens do not. Today the Line is still one of the highest expressions of Italian and traditional centers around it art, culture and gastronomy that sublimate the magnificence of the Tuscany region.
